What Can We Learn?: The Deck Log of the USS Jamestown

Interpreting Data

All documents and text associated with this activity are printed below, followed by a worksheet for student responses.

Introduction

Explore the logbook below to see the kinds of data the USS Jamestown and ships like it were required to keep during the Civil War.  Consider why U.S. naval vessels like the Jamestown would have kept log books like this, the data we can glean from these logbooks and the ways historians can use and interpret this data.

USS Jamestown

10/28/1861 - 11/8/1861

This logbook (also called a captain's log or deck log) includes chronological entries documenting the daily activities of the USS Jamestown from October 28, 1861, to November 8, 1861, during the first year of the Civil War. The ship was part of the Atlantic Blockading Squadron, helping to form a blockade of Confederate ports on the southeast coast to prevent the Confederacy from receiving necessary supplies.

These pages begin with the ship at anchor near Bald Head Lighthouse, near the mouth of the Cape Fear River, off the coast of North Carolina.

See the entire logbook documenting June 5, 1861, to June 23, 1862, in the National Archives online catalog.
