Introduction

Background information:
The Union Blockade of the Confederate Southern port cities proved to be one of the most influential developments of the entire American Civil War. On June 5, 1861, the U.S.S. Jamestown was recommissioned to serve on the Atlantic Blockade Squadron. From June 1861 to May 1862, the U.S.S. Jamestown destroyed or captured an impressive five ships stretching from Florida to North Carolina.

U.S.S. Jamestown--Union Blockade Information
June 5th, 1861 - Recommissioned on outbreak of Civil War and served with the Atlantic Blockading Squadron.

August 5th, 1861 - Drove bark Alvarado ashore off Fernandina, Florida (Northern Florida) and set her on fire.

August 31st, 1861 - Captured schooner Aigburth off coast of Florida (just south of Fernandina, FL).

September 4th, 1861 - Captured and scuttled schooner Col. Long near Savannah, Georgia.

December 15th, 1861 - Captured schooner Havelock near Cape Romaine, South Carolina.

May 1st, 1862 - Captured brig Intended off Wilmington, North Carolina.
