This photograph of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Secretary of State John Foster Dulles was taken on October 30, 1956. The two were discussing the U.S. response to the worsening Suez Crisis. The crisis began on July 26, 1956, when Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser announced the nationalization of the British- and French-owned Compagnie Universelle du Canal Maritime de Suez (the Suez Canal Company).
