This illustration entitled, "A Popular Product", by cartoonist Clifford Berryman, which appeared in the Washington Evening Star on June 30, 1907, shows Uncle Sam issuing new $10 gold certificates which were created to offset the damage done by the financial panic which began earlier in the year. A financial panic on Wall Street began on March 13, 1907 with sharp price declines in stocks, bonds and commodities. The panic quickly spread, leading to an economic depression by the fall of 1907. In an effort to prop up the securities markets, reduce bank failures, and minimize the economic damage caused by the panic, the U.S. Government put more money in circulation by issuing new $10 gold certificates. An eager public quickly snapped up the new bills.
