This handwritten affidavit from Lewis Douglass concerns William H. Carney of the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts Infantry.

In this affidavit, filed on January 15, 1900, Lewis H. Douglass supported the Medal of Honor application for former Sgt. William H. Carney of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. Douglass was the son of Frederick Douglass and former sergeant major of the regiment. Carney, the flag bearer at Fort Wagner, survived the encounter but was wounded and retired with the colors when ordered to do so.
