This footage shows the 1958 championship tennis matches and trophy ceremonies at the United States National Championships in Forest Hills, NY. Althea Gibson defeated Darlene Hard in the women's championship match.
Gibson had become the first non-white person to compete for the U.S. National Tennis Championship in 1950. She grew up Harlem, New York, to become a champion of the very segregated sport of tennis in the 1950s. She was the first African-American to play and win at both Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals.
In the men's finals, Ashley Cooper defeated Mal Anderson. This film reel also includes footage of a boat race in Washington, DC (silent), and skiiers doing jumps in the Bavarian Alps.
