Maine government officials believed that British lumberjacks had invaded U.S. soil by logging timber in the Aroostook Valley. So they sent a land agent to evict the lumberjacks. After British officials arrested the agent, the Governor of Maine asked the Federal Government for assistance. Congress responded on March 3, 1839, with this Public Law authorizing 50,000 soldiers and $10,000,000 to answer the emergency.
