Also known as the Wilderness Act, this 1964 law provides for a National Wilderness Preservation System to ensure that wilderness lands will be protected in their natural condition. The System is composed of Federally owned land designated by Congress as “wilderness areas.” The Act defines “wilderness” and gives responsibility for maintaining the areas to the Federal agencies that have jurisdiction over them.
