On November 18, 1872, a deputy U.S. marshal arrested Susan B. Anthony for voting in the 1872 presidential election. Two months later, this indictment charged her with "wrongfully and unlawfully" voting for a candidate for Congress from the City of Rochester, New York, on November 5, 1872 in the first election district of the eighth Ward of the City of Rochester, “being then and there a person of the female sex.” She was convicted in June and sentenced to pay a $100 fine and court costs.
This is one of several federal court cases involving women arrested for illegally voting in the 1872 election in Rochester, NY, 48 years before the 19th amendment passed in 1920.
