Photographs from a report on slums in Puerto Rico entitled "Problems in Connection with Slum Clearance in Puerto Rico with Special Reference to the San Juan Area."
According to the report, this apartment building in San Juan known locally "Falansterio" was built by the Puerto Rico Emergency Reconstruction Administration. The first public building project in Puerto Rico, the project had a capacity for 216 families and was built of reenforced concrete to withstand hurricanes. Each apartment unit had two bedrooms, kitchen, a bath, and a combined living room/dining room. The apartment cost $667,000 and weekly rent was $2.00 to $4.25 per family.
