In 1929, Mrs. Mande M. McGehee applied to the Office of the Quartermaster General in the War Department for a headstone for the unmarked grave of Nathaniel M. McGehee. Daniel served in the Third Regiment of the Virginia Volunteers during the Spanish-American War. He also served in Company D, 23rd Virginia Infantry, Confederate States of America Army during the Civil War. The government granted the request (based on his Federal service) and shipped the headstone to Louisa, Virginia, in 1931.
