This is a copy of a painting attributed to John Neagle from a painting by Thomas Sully. It was gathered as part of the U.S. Constitution Sesquicentennial Commission, established in 1935 to plan activities commemorating the events leading up to the signing and ratification of the Constitution and the inauguration of George Washington as first President. These photographs document one of the Commission's most important accomplishments: an art exhibit of portraits of the signers of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence.
This primary source comes from the Records of Commissions of the Legislative Branch.
