The original caption for this photograph reads: Achtung! Sie Verlassen Jetzt West Berlin (Caution! You are leaving now West Berlin) Hundreds of signs like this surround West Berlin, the island of freedom 100 miles behind the Iron Curtain. These signs mark the border with the sharpest contrast in the world, the vivid contrast between two systems of living - the communist and free enterprise systems. This border makes the Berliners prisoners; in which ever direction they go, they are stopped by border signs. The pine forests and the beautiful lakes at the Havel River are off limits for more than two million Berliners. But these signs also mark the border which for years tens of thousands have crossed, fleeing from the regimentation and oppression of Communism to the freedom and safety of West Berlin. Friendship at the East-West Berlin border. H-32583
