In 1928, President Calvin Coolidge signed into law the Boulder Canyon Project Act., which authorized the construction of a dam on the Colorado River along the Arizona-Nevada state line. The dam would ultimately be named Hoover Dam after Coolidge's successor, Herbert Hoover.
