This photograph of President Bill Clinton and Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg was taken in the White House Rose Garden at the press conference held to announce Ginsburg's nomination to the Supreme Court. She was President Clinton's nominee to replace retiring Associate Supreme Court Justice Byron R. White. Judge Ginsburg is pictured standing at the podium with President Clinton at her right side. The image was photographed by Sharon Farmer.
Ginsburg had been the co-founder of and chief litigator for the Women’s Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). This career provided her with the experience of arguing six cases before the Supreme Court, all dealing in some way with gender discrimination. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter appointed Ginsburg as a judge to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, where she served for 13 years. Notably, Ginsburg was one of only nine women in a Harvard Law School class of over 500, and the first woman to serve on both the Harvard Law Review and the Columbia Law Review.
On August 3, 1993, Ginsburg was confirmed by a 96-3 vote in the Senate. She was sworn in as Associate Supreme Court Justice on August 10, 1993.
