This film, produced in 1976, surveys the history of women’s efforts to gain equal rights and examines the contributions of prominent women such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton to the women’s movement.
It also discusses the establishment of the National Commission on the Observance of International Women’s Year. After the United Nations declared 1975 International Women’s Year, President Ford issued Executive Order 11832 creating a National Commission on the Observance of International Women’s Year to promote equality between men and women. Several events held over the next few years culminated in the National Women’s Conference in Houston, Texas, on November 18-21, 1977. The commission organized the Women’s Conference as the United States’s answer to the United Nations World Conference on Women, held in 1975 in Mexico City.
