Sister Mary Martin James, of the Order of Saint Francis, declared her intention to become a U.S. citizen on April 9, 1948, while residing in St. Francis Convent in Little Falls, Minnesota. On her declaration she supplied her given name, Rose Harriet James, listed her occupation as “works of charity” and her race as “African descent.” Originally from British Columbia, the Sister entered the United States on March 19, 1943, via the Great Northern Railroad.
