William A. Deitz of Albany, New York, submitted his patent application for an improved boot. In his application of 1867, he states that opening the boot in the back, rather than the customary front or side opening, made it easier to put on. He also claimed the back opening may help keep the foot dry when walking in the rain or through puddles.
