Mr. Gallup requests permission of the court to seek out and recover his fugitive slave, Stephen Bennet.

To the Hon[ble] Upton S Heath Judge of the Circuit Court of the United States in and for the District of MarylandThe petition of Edward B Gallup of the city of Baltimore and the state of Maryland respectfully represents unto your honor, that he is a slave for life named Stephen Bennett now about twenty six years of age: that he purchased said slave at a public sale from Augustus W Bradford Esqr administrator of the estate of Thomas Gallup deceased in December One Thousand Eight Hundred and Thirty Four: that said slave absconded and ran way from the service of your petitioner then living in Havre de Grace in the month of July One Thousand Eight Hundred Forty Seven, and that said slave of your petitioner is according to the best of his knowledge and belief now living in the state of Pennsylvania. To the end that therefore that / your

Your Petitioner may recover his said slave and regain his service due unto him. He prays your honor to enquire into the matter and facts alledged in his petition so as to enable him to obtain the benefits of the Act of Congress at the present session entitled an Act to Amend and Supplementary to the Act entitled Respecting Fugitives From Justice and Persons Escaping From the Service of Their Masters approved July12 [th?] in the year One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety Three and as a duty bound ever pray it[?]
