This segment of a United News Newsreel shows Franklin Delano Roosevelt taking the oath of office and delivering the inaugural address at the White House. People shown include: Harry Hopkins, Sec. Henry Stimson and Mrs. Stimson, Sec. and Mrs. Forrestal, Sec. Harold Ickes, Adm. Ernest King, Sec. and Mrs. Stettinius, Gen. George Marshall and Mrs. Marshall, and Vice Presidents Henry Wallace and Harry Truman.
In 1945, President Franklin D. Roosevelt made history by being sworn in for a fourth term. Because the country was in the middle of World War II, a simple ceremony was held on the South Portico of the White House intead of at the Capitol Building. FDR is the only President to have had four inaugurations. In 1951, the 22nd Amendment was ratified, limiting the Presidency to two terms.
