Providing fresh beef to the battle-weary was a complicated endeavor. During the Revolutionary War, emaciated cattle that had been driven directly to the camps were slaughtered because there wasn’t enough fodder to keep them alive. In The army tried outsourcing its beef supply in the 1820s.
