This 1923 drawing by artist D. Falls depicts Captain Alexander Hamilton, of the Provincial Company, New York Artillery, in 1776. Born in 1755 in the British West Indies, Hamilton served during the Revolutionary War as George Washington’s aide, and later, as President Washington’s Secretary of the Treasury. His support for a new Constitution in the Federalist Papers (1788) continues to be regarded as one of the most important statements of political theory in American history.
