This document originates from the file pertaining to the case of Polly Bemis whose life was made famous in the movie "A Thousand Pieces of Gold". Bemis and 50 other Chinese persons in Idaho were arrested for failure to obtain the required Certificate of Residence. They were all acquitted and granted their certificates after it was shown that they were unable to obtain the certificates due to an inability to get to town due to heavy snows the winter of 1895.
