This illustration by cartoonist Clifford Berryman, which appeared in the Washington Evening Star on April 26, 1907, depicts the exposition held in Norfolk, Virginia, to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown. Pocahontas, the Powhatan chief's daughter who assisted the colonists at Jamestown, is shown with her father watching the noisy celebration led by cannon fire from U.S. Navy warships.
The Jamestown exposition opened with great pomp and show of U.S. military might. Representatives of many countries were invited for the opening of the exposition celebrating the first permanent colony of the English in America.
