The original caption of this photograph reads: Some American Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines, back from the Pacific, would have people believe that the South Sea island under the Southern Cross are not the fabled lands of paradise. On Maui, second largest of the Hawaiin group, Corporal Eugene Jones ,a Marine combat photographer and die-hard romanticist, decided to prove that with certain essentials a leave on Maui could be ideal.
The Marine was Private First Class Thomas (Buck) Buchannan, 21, of Banner Elk, N.C., a veteran of all the Fourth marine Division's campaighns. He served with the Twenty-Fifth Marine Regiment and was wounded on Iwo Jima. The pretty girl was Mona Manary, native of Maui and former student of music at the University of Rochester. They spent two days roaming Maui's valleys and beaches in Jeep and on foot.
Maui island was the retreat of the Fourth Division between its sailing to Roi-Namur, Saipan and Tinian, and Iwo Jima. The several, beautiful stream-beds which wind across the island are responsible for Maui's name of "Valley Island". Maui is famous for Mt. Kolekole, a burned out volcano with an elevation of 10,000 feet and a crater 15 miles across.
Picnic By The Sea- On one of Maui's beautiful beaches, Mona and Buck selected a postcard setting for a picnic during the lazy afternoon hours. They seem to be enjoying each other's company, ignoring thte clamor of the bathers in the background.
