In April 1864 Catholic Bishop Patrick Lynch ran the Union blockade to reach Rome. As Confederate commissioner to the Vatican, he sought to convince Pope Pius IX to recognize the Confederacy as a nation. The Pope ultimately decided not to confer recognition. Lynch also sought support for the Confederate cause at the courts of the “principal Catholic Powers” of France, Spain, and Austria. They, too, declined to recognize the Confederacy.
