A slave named Ann from Paris, Missouri, wrote to her “dear husband” on January 19, 1864. She told him about her worsening situation and her need for money to feed and clothe herself and their daughter. Even though her husband was in the Army and she was enslaved, she expressed hope that she, too, would soon be free.
This primary source comes from the Records of U.S. Army Continental Commands.
