After the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in Texas v. Johnson that burning the American flag was protected free speech, President George H.W. Bush was so outraged by the decision that he proposed a constitutional amendment banning the burning or desecration of the American flag. Francis “Frank” Albert Sinatra wrote to President George H. W. Bush, “I applaud you long and loud for your reaction.”
