The original caption for this photograph reads: Neuro-surgeon William Stewart performs a five hour brain operation aboard the USS Repose off South Vietnam. The young Marine being operated on was hit with mortar fragments near Da Nang, operated on in the field and rushed to the hospital ship off shore. Lieutenant Commander Steward, from Bowling Green, Ohio, said, ‘We had to operate again because the brain had begun to swell and we had relieve the pressure or the boy would have died.’
