On July 5, 1864, Orestes Cleveland received a patent for an improved pencil. In his application, he claims that his invention would discontinue the need for glue to keep the lead in place within the pencil. Cleveland states that using glue is ineffective because the lead will become loose, especially when exposed to dampness, and he claims his invention will prevent this problem.
