Petition for Woman Suffrage from Residents of Melrose, Middlesex, Massachusetts
ca. 1877
This petition from the residents of Melrose, Massachusetts was part of a petition drive organized by the National Woman Suffrage Association calling for a constitutional amendment that would give women the right to vote. Another organization at the time, the American Woman Suffrage Association took a different approach to enfranchising women and focused on a state-by-state strategy. The first signature, Mary Livermore, under the women column of this petition indicates that there was some crossover between the efforts of these two organizations, as she was the president of the American Woman Suffrage Association at the time.
The other side of this petition provides instructions for carrying out the petition drive. It provides information on how petitions like this one were circulated and the role the National Woman Suffrage Association played in coordinating and delivering the petitions to Congress.
It also includes a list of the officers of the National Woman Suffrage Association.
