This petition signed by the employees of the U.S. mint, on August 31, 1789, was their promise to return to work after the “present prevailing fever is over.” Trying to survive an epidemic, 37 these workers were reluctant to go to their workplace. Just five years earlier, a yellow fever plague took the lives of 10 percent of Philadelphia’s population.
