The German submarine U-111 surrendered to the Allies after the November 1918 armistice that ended World War I and was allocated to the U.S. Navy in 1919. The submarine was later used in the Victory Bond campaign to promote the sale of war bonds along the northeast coast of the United States. American bombers sank U-111 in 1921, during air power tests conducted under the direction of Brigadier General Billy Mitchell.
