In this July 16, 1969, photograph, Apollo 11 program director Air Force Lieutenant General Samuel C. Phillips monitors pre-launch activities. Four days later, Mission Commander Neil A. Armstrong and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin E. (Buzz) Aldrin, Jr., became the first humans to walk on the Moon.
