This stereograph of Shoshone Falls, Idaho, was taken in 1868 during the King Survey along the 40th parallel. Congress had first authorized exploration of western lands for scientific purposes a year earlier, and 25-year-old Clarence King led an expedition to study the resources and geology of this region.
