The original caption reads: Rolling hills on the outskirts of Atchison, Kansas, showing an area of landscape painted by George Catlin between 1830 and 1850. It was tallgrass prairie as described in the Lewis and Clark Journals. The country road in the distance at the left leads to St. Patrick’s Church, an early pioneer Catholic Church.
This photograph was taken as part of the Documerica project – a social and environmental photography project sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency during the 1970s.
