Additional details from our exhibits and publications
Rush Holt was elected to the Senate in November 1934 at age 29 but did not take office until June 1935. The Senate Committee on Privileges and Elections, which investigates candidates with challenged credentials or election results, examined Holt’s election since Senators must be 30 years old before they can serve. A “credential” for Senators and Representatives verifies that a person was properly elected or appointed to his or her position in Congress. This document is a Senate resolution from 1935 verifying Rush Holt’s position as Senator in the U.S. Senate. A Senate resolution is a formal opinion adopted by the Senate.
