The Sherman Monument by sculptor Carl Rohl-Smith (and others, following his death) was erected in Washington, DC in 1903.
The 14-foot bronze equestrian statue of the famous Civil War commander faces north atop a tall granite pedestal. At the corners there are bronze soldiers representing four branches of the Army; infantry on the northwest; artillery on the northeast; cavalry on the southeast; and engineers on the southwest. On the east side below the statue is a bronze group of a woman and three children representing Peace. On the west side of the pedestal is a bronze group representing War with a woman with bound handsstanding on a dead soldier who clasps a rifle, two vultures prey on his body.
The photos and description of the Sherman Monument are part of materials from the President's Park South registration form for the National Register of Historic Places.
