On June 15, 1864, President Abraham Lincoln wired Union Gen. Ulysses Grant approving a plan for a flanking movement against Petersburg, Virginia, that Grant had proposed on June 14. Unfortunately, Union troops failed to exploit their advantage and the war continued.
