Drawn just two days before the end of President Theodore Roosevelt's second term in office and on the eve of his African safari, this cartoon alludes to an artistic quandary: since Roosevelt was the inspiration for the teddy bear, should the cartoonist discontinue use of the symbol once he left office? To the delight of "Washington Evening Star" readers, the cartoonist continued throughout his career to use the beloved teddy bear.
