A velvet binding protects the first treaty between the United States and the Kingdom of Belgium. The agreement, which established commerce and navigation conditions advantageous to both countries, was signed by King Leopold I on November 10, 1845. He authenticated his signature with a silver disk, or skippet, containing a wax seal with the Royal Arms of Belgium.
