This venditioni exponas (Latin for "expose to sale") commands the U.S. Marshal to give ten days notice of the sale of personal property and twenty days notice of the sale of real estate in the case of U.S. v. All the Rights, Titles, of Robert E. Lee. It further orders the Marshal to sell the personal property only and have the money from the sale in the Court at Alexandria on August 1, 1864.

THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TO THE MARSHAL OF THE EASTERN DISTRICT
OF VIRGINIA—GREETING:
Whereas a Libel was filed in the District Court of the United States for the Eastern District of
Virginia at [handwritten] Alexandria [printed] , on the [handwritten] 22 nd [printed] day of
[handwritten] February [printed] , in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty
[handwritten] four [printed] , by [handwritten] L H Chandler Esq United States District Attorney
[printed] against [handwritten] All the rights titles interests and Estate of Robert E Lee in and to
All that certain piece or parcel of land with the House and buildings thereon situated lying and
being in Alexandria County in the Eastern District of Virginia, known as the Arlington House
Estate, formerly owned by George Washington Parke Custis and lately occupied by the said
Robert E Lee Consisting of Eleven Hundred acres more or less
Together with all the goods chattals and other personal property of the said Robert E Lee in and
upon the said premises
[printed] praying that the same may be condemned and sold for the causes on the Libel alleged.
And whereas the said

[printed] has been attached by the process issued out of the said District Court in pursuance of
the said Libel, and is now in custody by virtue thereof; and such proceedings have been
thereupon had, that by the Decree of the said Court on this cause made and pronounced on the
[handwritten] 15 th [printed] day of [handwritten] April [printed] , in the year of our Lord one
thousand eight hundred and sixty [handwritten] four [printed] , the said [handwritten] Real Estate
and personal property
[printed] was condemned and ordered to be sold by you, the said Marshal, after giving
[handwritten] ten [printed] days notice of such sale ^ [handwritten] of the Personal property (and
twenty days notice of the sale of the Real Estate) [printed] according to law. [handwritten] By
publication thereof in One of the Newspapers published in the City of Alexandria

notice, and at the time, place, and upon the terms by law required; and that you have the money
