Early in the war men volunteered for patriotic reasons. Later the U.S. Government began offering financial incentives. In addition to monthly pay, rations, and clothing, the Federal Government and some states paid bounties. Recruits received these lump sum payments<&ndash>initially $100<&ndash>in installments or when they were discharged.
