The original caption for this photograph reads: Heroic Women of France. Hitched to the plough, cultivating the soil. All agriculture rests upon their shoulders. Uncomplaining, with an attitude that amounts almost to religious exultation, the woman of France bears the burden. It comes from a series of photographs of Food Conservation Activities during World War I.
