Road to Revolution: Patriotism or Treason?

Use this activity at the beginning of a unit on the American Revolution when introducing or reviewing the causes of the war and the various opinions represented during the writing of the Declaration of Independence. For grades 6-8.

Before beginning the activity, review the title of the document and explain that this image depicts the tarring and feathering of a tax collector. Explain what is meant by "tarring and feathering" to provide context to the image if this is students' first exposure to the expression.

This activity is a great introduction to a more in depth analysis activity such as a debate among patriots, loyalists, and undecided colonists over the Lee Resolution and/or the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
