The original caption for this photograph reads: Books and objects in Duncan's Mission School thrown over the floor in one of the schoolrooms by bureau of Education agents in 1915 seizure of mission buildings.
It comes from a series of photos and postcards depicting the Tsimshian inhabitants of Metlakatla, Alaska. The community was founded and led by unordained Anglican minister William Duncan after leaving Metlakatla, British Columbia.
Later, some of the community worked with the Bureau of Indian Affairs to try and oust Duncan from his position. In 1914-1915, the Government seized many Mission buildings and built a modern school.
