The original caption for this photograph reads: Vice President Bush takes the Oath of Office and becomes the 41st President of the United States. Wife Barbara holds two Bibles: one used by George Washington during his first inauguration in 1789. This Bible was loaned by St. John's Lodge No. 1 of the Free and Accepted Masons of New York City. The second Bible was a gift to the President-Elect from the House and Senate Prayer Group. Each Bible was open to the Beatitudes.
