In this document dated February 15, 1844, Sam Houston—President of the Republic of Texas—appointed J. Pinckney Henderson as a Special Agent. He was given full authority to negotiate a treaty of alliance and annexation between the United States and the Republic of Texas. A former Texas Attorney General, Secretary of State, and Minister to France and England, Henderson was elected the new state’s first governor in 1845.
