By signing this document on August 21, 1874, Bull Eagle of the Lakota Sioux enlisted as a scout with the 11th Infantry Regiment during the Plains Indians Wars. He listed his occupation on line two. In 1866, Congress had authorized the enlistment of up to 1,000 Indian scouts. Most joined to help track rival tribes. Unlike soldiers, scouts typically enlisted for only six months.
