This is a letter from the civil case Rachel Lynn Bell, a Minor, by Odessa K. Bell, Her Mother and Next Friend, et al. v. School City of Gary, Indiana.. In this case, the parents of approximately one hundred children enrolled in Gary, Indiana public schools alleged that the defendant intentionally maintained a segregated school system in violation of their constitutional rights. The court sided with the defense. The district court case file includes notices, orders, briefs, the complaint, exhibits, transcript of proceedings, and affidavits. This case was appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, which agreed with the District Court's ruling. This document was digitized by teachers in our Primarily Teaching 2014 Summer Workshop in Chicago.
